The College of Mediators is a vibrant and thriving community of professional mediators who believe in the highest standards of Mediation and training provision.

Our members practice across a wide variety of fields (family, community, workplace, civil and commercial, intergenerational, SEND and more) and come from all sorts of backgrounds.

We have many long-standing members who have been mediating for over thirty years and we also have newly-trained members who are just starting out in their role as mediators.

We believe in valuing the contributions of all members and being a relevant, supportive membership body to all.

Membership Information

There are many benefits to being a Trained Member or Accredited Member of the College of Mediators:

Associate/Student Mediators:

For trainee mediators, students and non practising mediators who are interested in the College of Mediators’ work, with the view to becoming a Trained Mediator; or have previously practised as a mediator and would like to stay in touch with news from the College of Mediators.

Trained Mediators:

(T.M.C.M) These are adult mediators who have successfully attended a College recognised training course. The course includes a level of assessment which states that the mediator has an understanding of the principles and process of Mediation and has demonstrated the basic skills of a mediator based on role play. To maintain your membership as a Trained Mediator you must complete at least 15 hours of Mediation each year, receive the appropriate support/supervision for your area of mediation and undertake at least 10 hours of mediation related continuing professional development (CPD).

Accredited Mediators:

(A.M.C.M.) Mediators, of all disciplines, except Family mediators in England and Wales and SEND mediators, can apply for Accredited mediator status with the college by completing the College’s competence assessment process based on real cases and demonstrating their skills and knowledge to a higher level in a variety of cases. To maintain your membership as an Accredited Mediator you must facilitate at least 15 hours mediation each year, receive the College specified level of supervision/support for your area of mediation  and participate in at least 10 hours mediation related CPD per year. Family Mediators in England and WalesTo become an accredited family mediator in England or Wales, you first need to attend an FMC (Family mediation council) approved foundation training course. After this, you can register with the FMC as working towards accreditation, and then start work to build up a portfolio of evidence that you meet the competencies outlined in the FMC standards framework. Send Mediators should follow the accreditation requirements following SEND mediator training to become accredited SEND mediators.

A separate and distinguished category of membership is reserved for Fellows. Fellows are esteemed individuals who have maintained continuous College Membership for a period of 10 years or more. They are accredited and trained Members who have demonstrated unwavering commitment to the College for over a decade.

In exceptional cases, individuals with 8 or 9 and a half years of continuous membership may qualify for this category, provided they have a valid reason, such as ill health, for a temporary break in their membership. Decisions regarding exceptions will be at the discretion of the Directors.

To be eligible for Fellowship, a Member must meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a clean disciplinary record without any serious adverse findings resulting in sanctions by any regulatory or membership body within the past 10 years.
  • Have actively contributed to upholding the College’s reputation and advancing the mediation profession.

College Members who have been active for at least 10 years can initiate their application for Fellowship by completing the online application form. Additionally, they must secure the support of two Members with a minimum of 5 years of membership, who are willing to provide letters of support.

The Board will hold the responsibility of evaluating applications and has the discretion to assess each case individually. Please note that there will be a processing fee associated with the application for Fellow status.

Upon designation as a Fellow, College Members will have the privilege of using the designatory letters ‘FCM’ to signify their status within the College and the mediation profession.

The Fellowship category is a prestigious recognition of a Member’s long-term commitment, expertise, and contributions to the College’s mission and the mediation field.

A practising mediator who has successfully completed a recognized foundation Mediation training course is eligible to join the College of Mediators as a Trained member, as long as they also meet the practice, supervision and continuing professional development requirements.

Practice – Trained and Accredited members must carry out a minimum of fifteen hours’ Mediation practice per year.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – Trained and Accredited members must carry out at least ten hours* of CPD per year. This can include training or other events, reading, writing, research, project work or any other activity which enables you to develop your practice as a mediator. Please check with your own PPC for further clarification.

A foundation training course is recognised if it has been approved through the College of Mediators, Mediation UK, Family Mediation Council, Open College Network, Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution, Institute of Leadership and Management or Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Competence assessment schemes which are currently recognised by the College of Mediators for Accredited membership are:

  • Mediator Accreditation Scheme (MAS)– managed by the College of Mediators, this is suitable for mediators practising in all areas besides family (separation and divorce) and SEND (special educational needs and disability) Mediation.
  • Family Mediation Council Accreditation (FMCA)– managed by the Family Mediation Council, this is suitable for family (separation and divorce) mediators practising in England and Wales.

The College of Mediators recognises the skills, knowledge and experience of mediators through our individual membership options. Good quality Mediation is also very dependent on Mediation organisations that play an important role in supporting mediators to meet the College’s standards.

Following requests from organisations wishing to illustrate their commitment, as a group, to our policies and Code of Practice, we developed an Affiliated Organisation Status in 2012. This option is available to bodies that already have individual College members and that meet our required standards.

How to Become a College of Mediators Affiliated Organisation

Affiliation is open to Mediation organisations who:

  • Have 50% or more of their Mediation staff as individual College members
  • Subscribe to the College of Mediators Code of Practice
  • Support the practice and professional development of their mediators and support staff through College-recommended levels of Professional Practice Consultancy/Supervision and Training
  • Have appropriate complaints procedures
