A practising mediator who has successfully completed a recognized foundation Mediation training course is eligible to join the College of Mediators as a Trained member, as long as they also meet the practice, supervision and continuing professional development requirements.
Practice – Trained and Accredited members must carry out a minimum of fifteen hours’ Mediation practice per year.
Supervision – Trained and Accredited members must attend at least four hours of supervision/PPC (professional practice consultancy) per year. At least two of these hours must be 1-1 and up to two can be in a group setting.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – Trained and Accredited members must carry out at least ten hours of CPD per year. This can include training or other events, reading, writing, research, project work or any other activity which enables you to develop your practice as a mediator. Please check with your own PPC for further clarification.
A foundation training course is recognised if it has been approved through the College of Mediators, Mediation UK, Family Mediation Council, Open College Network, Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution, Institute of Leadership and Management or Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Competence assessment schemes which are currently recognised by the College of Mediators for Accredited membership are:
- Mediator Accreditation Scheme (MAS)– managed by the College of Mediators, this is suitable for mediators practising in all areas besides family (separation and divorce) and SEND (special educational needs and disability) Mediation.
- Family Mediation Council Accreditation (FMCA)– managed by the Family Mediation Council, this is suitable for family (separation and divorce) mediators practising in England and Wales.
